Hi, Wondercader — it’s Dr. Dan Yadegar, Neil’s phabulous physician, back with you today.

If you are anything like me, the end of the year is a time for indulging in rich foods and celebratory drinks. I, for one, have always been a sucker for a slice of pumpkin pie! But when the holidays end and the new year begins, you’re likely to start focusing on becoming a healthier and happier you. Which is what every doctor loves to hear! And I’m here to help.

Sticking to the inside/out approach to wellness laid out by my patient, Neil, for this special issue of Wondercade, I’m sharing a recipe for a delicious, nutritious detox smoothie. [Neil Note: Hey, Doc, you left out the word “favorite” in between “my” and “patient.” Also, see you next month for my checkup.] It’s jam-packed with vitamins and antioxidants. I’ll list out the ingredients first (which are all pantry staples), and then break them down one by one, to show you just how healthy this easy-to-make drink actually is. Cheers to your health in 2024.

Ingredient Benefits:

Everything in this smoothie is incredibly good for you, and will do wonders for your health whether it’s resolution season or any time of year. (Not to mention they’re all incredibly flavorful, too!) Let’s get into the nitty-gritty about what makes these ingredients so perfect for a detox.

Spinach: Rich in vitamins A and K, as well as iron and folate, spinach supports overall health and provides essential nutrients.

Cucumber: Hydrating and low in calories, cucumber adds a refreshing element to the smoothie while contributing vitamins and minerals.

Green apple: Packed with fiber and antioxidants, green apples add natural sweetness without a high sugar content.

Lemon: A great source of vitamin C, lemons help with detoxification and digestion and provide a zesty flavor to the smoothie.

Ginger: Known for its anti-inflammatory and digestive properties, ginger adds a hint of spice and supports a healthy gut.

Cilantro (coriander leaves): Cilantro is believed to have heavy metal-detoxifying properties and may help the body eliminate toxins.

Coconut water: Hydrating and rich in electrolytes, coconut water provides a light and tropical base for the smoothie.
